A place still exists on the Costa del Sol which lies between small coves, surrounded by impressive mountain scenery. At the easterly end of the region, only 50 km from Malaga and within one and half hours' drive of Granada is the delightful village of Nerja with its many interesting features. Its mild climate offers one the opportunity to enjoy to the full what this area has to offer and much of its character belongs to its Moorish past.
The accommodation offered (for a maximum of 4 people) is in a converted Olive Mill in a hamlet known as La Molineta, which was originally a group of mills used for the crushing of grain or olives, all of which have now been converted into homes. La Molineta lies 4 km from Nerja and 2 km from Frigiliana which is another attractive but smaller village. From among the whitewashed villages of the Costa del Sol, Frigiliana gained the award as the best village in 1982 and 1988.
The Mill House itself is a house of character and antiquity. It still retains the original olive-grinding base set in the floor of the spacious living/dining room. The crushing stone, in the shape of a spinning top which revolved around the stone base, now stands outside the front door. There is a galley kitchen which houses a fridge/freezer and a washing machine. The bathroom and toilet are also on this floor. There is direct access to a pretty patio and, for someone who is not afraid of heights, a loft ladder leads to the roof which is an ideal spot for sunbathing. Stairs lead to two bedrooms, one of which has a double bed on the balcony floor above the sitting room. The other bedroom is furnished with twin beds. Both bedrooms have built in wardrobes and chest of drawer space. The furniture throughout suits the rustic nature of the dwelling.
The surrounding countryside is ideal for exploring, with many interesting walks and excursions. Details of these can be obtained from the Information Office in Nerja alongside the Balcon de Europa. Due to the location of the Olive Mill in the hills, there should be some interesting birds and wildlife to be seen depending on the season. Although it is possible to live in the house and use public transport (a bus stops in the Molineta on its route from and to Nerja), it would be more convenient to hire a car. A Malaga airport car hire firm offers 15% discount to anyone staying in the Olive Mill so please ask us for details if you are interested in car hire. A car would be of benefit to those who wanted to explore the many interesting locations in this part of southern Spain. Malaga airport is approximately one hour's drive away and, for those who do not wish to use a car, a taxi-service can be arranged for approximately £40 (the price would be subject to confirmation at time of booking).
Nerja with its internationally famous Burriana beach has been the inspiration of numerous artists and writers who have set up residence. The historic centre was constructed around 1487 and a castle originally stood on the spot now occupied by the Balcon de Europa which is a must for an evening stroll with its wonderful sea and coastal views. There is a scenic path winding its way from the Balcon, through rocks bordering the seashore and finishing at the Burriana beach. A wide variety of restaurants exists in both Nerja and Frigiliana.
Many local festivals are still celebrated such as Holy Week (Easter); the San Juan (24th June) and Dia del Carmen (16th July) are celebrated in their own special way and there is also the San Isidro pilgrimage (15th May). There are a wide range of cultural events throughout the year. Of particular note is the acclaimed "Nerja Caves Festival" (July) which takes place amongst stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years.
As will be seen, there is plenty of interest to be had and all types of pursuits to be followed in the excellent climate that the area enjoys.
